Intervals are typical indoor ranges. Your light, pot and season change them — always check the soil first. Pet safety per the ASPCA plant lists.
The moth orchid (Phalaenopsis) is the orchid you see in every supermarket, and with the right care its flowers last for months — and come back. It grows on trees in the wild, so its roots want air as much as water.
Light
Bright, indirect light — an east-facing window is ideal. Leaves should be a medium green; dark green means too little light, yellowish-red means too much sun.
Watering
Water when the bark is dry and the roots in a clear pot look silvery-grey instead of green — often once a week in summer and every 10 to 14 days in winter. Soak the pot for 10 minutes, then let it drain completely. Never let it stand in water, and keep water out of the leaf crown.
Potting medium and repotting
Moth orchids grow in orchid bark, not soil. Repot every one to two years, after flowering, when the bark breaks down or roots overflow the pot. A clear pot lets you check the roots.
Humidity and temperature
Average humidity works; 50–60% is ideal. Keep it between 16 and 29 °C.
Getting it to rebloom
After flowering, cut the spike above a node or at the base. A few weeks with cooler nights (around 15–18 °C) in autumn triggers a new flower spike. Feed with orchid fertiliser every few weeks while it grows.
Common problems
- Soft, brown, mushy roots: overwatering or broken-down bark. Trim and repot.
- Wrinkled, limp leaves: thirst, or roots that have rotted and can't take up water.
- Buds dropping: a move, drafts or a sudden temperature change.
- No new flowers: too little light, or no cool period.
Is a moth orchid safe for pets?
Yes. Phalaenopsis orchids are listed as non-toxic to cats and dogs.
